Batgirl #6 SPOILER REVIEW

 Writer: Hope Larson
Artists: Rafael Albuquerque, Dave McCaig, Deron Bennet

Finally getting a break from her Asian adventure, Babs settles in to her seat on the aircraft home. Being a part of the bat family though means there’s never a drama free moment in her life. The plane starts shaking, and she’s off to investigate. None other than Poison Ivy is in the deck below. Ivy is smuggling an endangered and dangerous plant into America. Even Ivy can’t control her new pet, which she quickly comes to realize. She made a mistake, her and Babs now must team up to control or destroy the plant in order to save everyone on board. The plant is growing double, no triple in size and its roots aren’t shy to snag someone up. Batgirl breathing in the oxygen Ivy gave her brings an idea of suffocating the plant. Though Ivy is opposed, she realizes there is no other option. After the fight of red hair and greenery comes to an end Babs finally finds herself home. But she’s not alone in the airport, for Cobblepot’s Son has also arrived.

The art is very stylistic which works well excepts for when it’s just a character’s face in the panel. Then it looks a little distorted and unattractive. I did like Ivy’s and Bab’s signature look against solid dull backgrounds. The contrast there was really nice. There was definitely a bipolar moment going on with Ivy. Some panels she looked like the evil queen of the damned and others she was very girlie and almost innocent looking.

The Confessional

Well this issue was…cute. Which I don’t know if others agree with me but I don’t want a cute story I want action and badassery. Especially from Barbara Gordon who has a list full of skills and talents. I can see that this was kind of a buffer issue between story arcs. Batgirl has had a lot of ups and downs for me throughout the six issues. I love Barbara Gordon for so many reasons that I always want her story to be a front runner. So as the new antagonist enters I’m really hoping for more depth and full on action that would be in any Batman issue. This one was a hard one for me to rate, but it is Batgirl so I’ll be a little gentler.
