Batgirl Birds of Prey #5 SPOILER REVIEW

Writer: Julie Benson, Shawna Benson
Artists: Roge Antonio, Allen Passalaqua

Batgirl's Number One Fan

The girls have come upon fake Oracles lair, and they are pretty creeped out by the stalker vibe going on. As the girls spread out to find out more information an unknown figure enters the room. He asks if Barbara likes the collection, and that he’s working on getting the first grappling gun she’s ever had. Wow creepy much? Huntress being her classy self says they should just kill him and get it over with. Ignoring the suggestion, Barbara ask the dude who the hell he is!?! He responds with “Isn’t it obvious? I’m your biggest fan!” This guy is seemingly a whole lot less sinister the more time we spend with him. Canary obviously annoyed tells Huntress that their supposed to be super-villain is actually just a super fan. Super fan Gus goes on and on about how great Barbara is. She’s so great she even surpasses Batman (I think my husband would agree with that). Worried that this crazy guy knows more about Batman then he should, she begins questioning him. His theory is that Batman is actually seven different people. Relieved, Babs totally lets him believe that is true. Huntress brings up the killing idea again but yet again is shot down. Poor Huntress, you’ll kill something eventually. Not helping his case on the whole not being killed thing he calls Canary and Huntress by their real names and tells them stuff he admires about them like the band. So what does this crazed fan want? What else, but to be a part of the team! Why else would continuously almost kill them? Makes perfect sense…. maybe not so much.
This sets Barbra off and she full on freaks out on him, but he has an excuse for every event she names off. She tells him how could he think he’d be part of the team if he’s never helped them. But according to him he has helped her before. We go back to when the obsession first started. Oracle would reach out to hackers to help her get information. One lucky day Gus got the call to help. Even after Oracle disappeared back into the internet she had left quite an impression on Gus. He in turn decided to dedicate his life to finding out who Oracle was, and he obviously succeeded. Just then Gus gets a notification of Fenice’s whereabouts. He begs the girls to let him tag along on the mission. Huntress slips in the whole kill him suggestion again. I’m rooting for you girl, stay persistent. Babs takes a moment to collect herself in the bathroom. Then she goes out and tells Canary and Huntress to go get Fenice, and that she was going to stay behind. Babs tells Gus that she thinks he can help them, but she doesn’t trust him yet. Taking a seat behind the computers; Babs brings out her Oracle persona to help Huntress and Canary. This totally makes fan boy giddy to see her in action. Huntress and Canary get closer while Babs uses her tech skills to find out that all the mob money Gus stole went to charity. Guess he’s good people. Babs directs Huntress to take the shot once she has Fenice in sight. Huntress can’t take the shot. Why? Because Fenice is Huntress’s mother!

The Confessional

This was awesome! I just want to take a moment to appreciate the amazing panels of Gus geeking out over Barbara. The facial expressions were priceless and made me giggle. There was this weird moment where Babs goes to the bathroom and changes her appearance into Oracle, Barbara, and Batgirl. Seems like she had a mini existential crisis, because she asked “who am I?” Then in what I’m guessing is a confident voice she declares “I’m all three.” Alright then you go girl. I love the interactions and relationship between these three girls. They all compliment each other very well while bringing their unique quirks to the story. I was disappointed that fake Oracle turned out to be a new character. I think it would have been more impactful if it was someone we’ve already known. That said this issue was so fun and great it totally made up for it. I can’t wait to see what is next for these ladies.
