Justice League of America: The Atom Rebirth #1 SPOILER REVIEW

Writer: Steve Orlando
Artist: Andrew T. MacDonald
Price: $2.99

An origin story for a new Atom…

I don’t know a whole hell of a lot about The Atom, he wasn’t one of the heroes I was drawn to growing up or anything. But after reading the teaser we got in DC Universe Rebirth #1, I was intrigued and thought I would give it a shot… and I’m kind of glad I did. This issue works as an origin story for Ryan Choi and how he meets Ray Palmer A.K.A The Atom. It’s your pretty typical origin story. We see that Ryan is insanely smart but also just as quiet around people. Dr. Palmer sees potential in Ryan, so they start working together…

That’s right Ryan Choi!...

Fast forward a year later and we see Dr. Palmer asking Ryan why he is there. Why he does what he does. Ryan thinks it must be obvious, it’s because he wants to be in control of his fears and his phobias. Dr. Palmer doesn’t like this answer so tells Ryan to dig deeper. Well… it’s because Ryan has always felt too small to be noticed and he thinks that sometimes in science, even the smallest things can be even more important than the big ones. This is just what the doctor ordered. So the Dr. Palmer disappears (grows tiny) then reappears in his Atom suit. From here we see Ryan helping The Atom like his own Oracle as well as panels with Ryan dealing with school and becoming more courageous.

Help me Ryan Choi, you’re my only hope…

Another year later and The Atom is trapped and can’t think of a way to get away from this weird crazy mantis shrimp. Ryan figures out a way and luckily it works and he saves The Atoms life. Fast forward just one more week and Ryan is trying to get a hold of Dr. Palmer, calling him multiple times at home and at his office. Then the Dean of the University asks Ryan where he is so Ryan knows something weird is going on. At this point we are shown what we saw in DC Universe Rebirth #1 where Ryan gets into Dr. Palmers office and is greeted by a video. Turns out Dr. Palmer is trapped in the Micro verse and needs Ryan to put on an Atom Belt that he left for him and rescue him. The fate of the universe may depend on it. PLEASE HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH WATCHMEN… sorry… The issue ends with Ryan putting on the belt and proclaiming… You’re on!

The Confessional

I thought this was a decent issue for what it was. Which was kind of your typical origin story. But I am glad it only lasted one issue. Which makes sense since this is the Rebirth issue anyways so they can get away with it... I guess… I am looking forward to the next issue when we see the micro verse and all it has to offer. Hopefully. But other than that the art was really well done. I enjoyed the panels when The Atom is fighting all the microscopic monsters the most. The bright colors and shading are perfect.

Rating: Blessing ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆
