Writer: Cecil Castellucci
Illustrated: Marley Zarcone
Inked: Ryan Kelly

Letters: Saida Temofonte

Shade Visits the Zoo

Shade walks around the Zoo in her poetic mind where everything adds to her existential crisis of an existence. All the while her classmates marvel at her odd behavior, and question the girl they once knew. Her one true friend River knows the truth understands Shade’s questioning of everything. Since our world is so primitive compared to Shade’s, she can’t help but gawk. Elsewhere the scientists continue to attempt to get their hands on the coat of madness. We end with the real Meagan crashing into Shade to get her body, and her life back.

The Confessional:

I always feel like someone slipped me LSD when I read this book. Just because the pages are swirls of colors and oddities. Which completely works for this story. It’s almost a whimsical darker version of Wizard of Oz. A girl just wants to go home but is stuck in this crazy place. I really like the aspect of Shade dealing with the fact that the previous owner of this body was a horrible person. This horribleness is also the reason Shade is isolated from her peers, making it harder to adjust to Earth. I’m actually really hoping Meagan doesn’t get her body back, but nothing like a little drama to further the plot. I think my favorite character is River, he seems grounded and helps lower the intensity of weirdness in this book. I’ve enjoyed this arc so far. I won’t lie, the continuous existential crisis is kind of getting old, but I totally understand why it’s important to see this character struggle with…well…everything. Overall, definitely an interesting and different sort of story to read.
