Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps # 20

Writer: Robert Venditti
Pencils: Rafa Sandoval
Inks Jordi Tarragona
Color: Tomeu Morey

I hope you like the color green, because every page has a spectacle of the bright green power of will, trying to trudge forward. What’s the one thing that could be an equal to Hal Jordan’s strength and will? Well hold on to your seats, because we are about to find out.

Hindsight 20/20

Hal and the united Green and Yellow Lanterns desperately try to keep the prism beast at bay, but with no luck. That’s when Hal comes to a horrifying realization…all of this is because of him. That’s right he really Barry Allen’d this up. In the past when hope was lost he forged a ring with the Krona’s Gauntlet. Fearful of its powers, Hal promptly drove it deep into the dirt of a deserted planet. Now, Sarko has travelled from the future to use the gauntlet to do what no one has been able to do before; take down the Green Lanterns. Will the Lanterns be able to stand against the creation of one of the strongest among them?

Venditti is Killing it

I don’t think I’ve picked up an issue of Hal and the Lanterns without loving it, at least not in a very long time. Venditti has an act for keeping you in that sweet spot of suspenseful desperation, that has the reader turning the page quicker that they can read it. I always get excited when I get to see these super beings actually face something that would be a challenge for them. So often I think to myself…yeah, yeah the lanterns will throw a couple of punches and it’ll be over with. But this time I’m on the edge of my seat, because how are they going to take down pure will…will, that Hal Jordan made?!?

One thing I’ve noticed over the past couple weeks is how well Venditti gets you to care about all the characters, despite their short appearances in every book. Their qualities are highlighted really well, even when they only have a few lines. This speaks volumes about how much care and craftsmanship is taken in the process of bringing these heroes to life. Venditti really captures each person’s essence in a brilliant way.

Sum it Up!

A battle for the soul and the future of the universe is on the horizon. The Green Lantern’s fate is held loosely in their hands, as they throw everything they have at their aggressor. With talent that splatters incredible art on every page, and a writer who scripts a sensational plot and dynamic characters, I have no doubt that this story will be one of the classics.
