Previously in Suicide Squad: Amanda Waller’s attempt to recruit General Zod failed when he cut the kryptonite bomb out of his own brain. A battle with the Suicide Squad ensues but is quickly cut short when the Eradicator and Cyborg Superman show up.
***NON-SPOILERS and SUMMARY AT THE BOTTOM***
We Come for Zod
The Eradicator and Cyborg Superman threaten to obliterate all who stand against the children of Krypton. They are here for one thing and one thing only … a weapon. Not just any weapon, a weapon strong enough to kill Superman. “They’re here for Zod,” screams Amanda.
General Zod listens to no one, so when Cyborg Superman orders Zod to help them, he responds by ripping Cyborg Superman limb from limb. As Zod turns his attention to the Eradicator, the Suicide Squad takes advantage of the opportunity and attacks General Zod.
The Enemy of my Enemy
Nothing brings a group together like a common enemy, which is why the Eradicator and Cyborg Superman join the Suicide Squad and work together to stop Zod from unleashing his army of prisoners from the Phantom Zone. Rick Flag performs the ultimate sacrifice as he jumps into the portal to the Phantom Zone, bomb in hand, and detonates it, destroying the Phantom Zone and himself in the process. With Flag dead, who will lead the Squad?!?
Sum it up!
With the focus of the story being on Zod, the Eradicator, and Cyborg Superman, the Suicide Squad feels like guest characters in their own book. The encounter with the Supermen leaves one of the Squad members dead, finally making Suicide Squad interesting again. The death in this issue looks to set up future stories, so this is a great time to jump on for new readers.
